**Organic Farms Keeps Growing**
In the last ten years Menorca has seen an increase from 5 to 62 farmers operating an organic farming system. This is quite an increase, as in 1994 there was less than one hectare of organic land being farmed compared to more than 30,000 hectares at present. Even more good news for the environment is that the Island Council is granting a further 33,000 euros to encourage more Menorca farmers to go organic.

**GOB Says Adopt a Cattle Grid**
The ecological group, GOB, wants to make everyone aware of the problem posed to small wild animals by cattle grids.  They point out that not everybody is aware that small animals, such as a tortoises and hedgehogs, that fall between the bars are unable to escape and will die unless rescued. They ask that people who regularly walk in the country to check grids and retrieve any small animals. Also to note their location and adopt one in particular, checking it regularly for trapped animals.

**Wartime Wreck Discovered**
A team of Spanish and Italian divers have discovered the wreck of a French steamship that sank in a fierce storm just off the coast of Menorca in 1942.  The SS Lamoricie set sail from Algiers on the 9th of January 1942. It sprang a leak in the engine room during the storm, and despite attempts to launch lifeboats the ship went down with 300 passengers and crew losing their lives.
Among them was the Polish mathematician Jerzy Witold Rozycki who was one of the 3 people responsible for cracking the Enigma code used by the German Army during world war II.
